When we think of Mongolia, we at the same time remind Genghis Khan. On 1 September 2011, the CNN reported following article. ¡°Geneticists say almost one in ten men in Asia carry the DNA of Genghis Khan. Not surprising, considering Genghis Khan and his descendants conquered much of China, Russia, Central Asia, Europe and the Middle East. It is still the greatest land empire the world has known. In 25 years, the Mongolians captured more land than the Romans managed in 200 years¡±.

On the other hand relations between Korea and Mongolia are closely related during our long history. As all of you know well, Koreans and Mongolians have had a close relationship since the thirteenth century. However, the two peoples rarely contacted during the Ming and Qing dynasties as Chinese dominated over the Great China territory. Korea and Mongolia has had a friendly relationship since the end of the Cold War. Recently personnel exchanges and business cooperation from both countries have widely enhanced. It is no doubt that there are a lot of similarities of the two countries'''' peoples and cultures. If Mongolia''''s ample natural resources and Korea''''s well-trained technicians were to be united, there would be a great deal of advantages to both nations.

Korea and Mongolia established diplomatic relations in 1990, since then the two countries have maintained close friendship, and recently Korea and Mongolia have been deepening mutual cooperation. Furthermore, many volunteers from Korea International Cooperation Agency(KOICA) and Non-Governmental Organization(NGO) representatives are working in various fields of Mongolia society, such as medical, education, agriculture and technology. Also, many Korean construction companies have obtained reputation by well performing their mission in Mongolia over the last 20 years.

I think Mongolia and the ROK would have a great potentiality to develop considering our friendship ties, based upon economic cooperation and well-trained human resources. Both nations, in particular, will construct mutually beneficial relationship with the ROK¡¯s capital and IT technology into Mongolia¡¯s mining industry, agricultural innovation and energy related infrastructure.

I think the ROK-Mongolia inter-governmental joint committee established last year would surely contribute a leading role to accomplish such potentiality. In the past the ROK¡¯s foreign direct investment was mainly discussed in such areas as mining industry, railroad and energy infrastructure in the vicinity of mines. I hope in the future we want to utilize the ROK¡¯s investment, and pro-environmental technology and equipment for Mongolia to process mineral and raw material.
